Driver, fuel and road included
Our regular driver with 20+ years of experience, fuel, toll sections and pickup in Almaty are all in the quoted price; you don’t pay extra per passenger. National park entrance fees, ski passes and a local off-road vehicle, if your route needs them, are not included.
Round trip
The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Talgar is a small town right at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau, about 25–30 km east of Almaty. Above it rises Talgar Peak, 4,979 meters high — the highest point of the whole range and the three-headed summit you can see from the city on a clear day. From Talgar, gorges fan out into the mountains: Left, Middle and Right Talgar, Soldatskoye, Maralsai — their rivers flow down from the Talgar massif. People come here for conifer forests on ancient moraines, slopes of wild apple trees and easy mountain walks an hour from the big city.
The drive from Almaty along the Talgar highway takes about 40–60 minutes, depending on traffic leaving the city. Public transport does not go to the trailheads, and a taxi is hard to find after you come down from the gorge — which is why groups book a minibus: the driver stays in the parking area and takes everyone home at the agreed time, and nobody in the group spends the day behind the wheel instead of in the mountains.
Almaty to Talgar: the road and stops
The route heads east along the Talgar highway — the same Almaty–Talgar–Turgen road that leads to the foothill gorges. It is some 25–30 km from Almaty to the edge of Talgar, roughly 40–60 minutes on the road, depending on traffic. The town itself lies at about 1,000–1,200 meters, right against the wall of the mountains, so the scenery outside the window changes almost as soon as you leave the city.
From Talgar the road turns south toward the Left Talgar Gorge and the base at the entrance to the mountains. After that comes a dirt road and then a footpath, so the minibus takes the group as close to the start of the route as the road allows, and from there you walk. The driver waits in the parking area — you won’t have to find a car back from the gorge.
What to see around Talgar
The most accessible for a walk is Left Talgar: the trail winds through spruce forest on ancient moraines and gradually climbs toward the mountaineering camps. It is a classic weekend hike with no technical difficulty — all you need is comfortable shoes, enough water and reasonable fitness. Along the way you pass wild apple trees and conifer forest, with open views of the Talgar massif.
Keep in mind: the Middle and Right Talgar gorges are part of the Almaty State Nature Reserve, and entry requires a permit arranged in advance — nobody is allowed into the reserve without one. The permit is not included in the trip price and is not arranged by the driver. The popular Big Talgar Pass, despite its name, is reached not from the town of Talgar but from the Shymbulak side via the cable car — if that is the one you want, the route will be different; we will advise when you book.
Why go by minibus
There is no public transport to the mountain trailheads near Talgar, and getting a taxi to take a dirt road, then calling a car back out of the gorge, is a hassle of its own. One Hiace takes care of it: it picks the whole group up in Almaty, drives you to the start of the route and meets you after the hike at the agreed time. You don’t split into several cars or lose each other on the way.
Tell us in advance which gorge you are going to, how far you plan to walk and roughly how long it will take — we will plan the driver’s waiting time in the parking area around your pace. For a group of 8–13 people, a whole minibus with a driver costs less than taxis both ways, and after the descent you ride home, tired but together, in a warm, air-conditioned cabin.
