Almaty sits at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau, and almost all the main sights of Semirechye are within a day’s drive of the city. Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy Lake, Big Almaty Lake, the Singing Dune of Altyn-Emel, Medeu and Shymbulak in the mountains — any of these is easy to reach in a Toyota Hiace minibus with your own driver. We take up to 13 people on board, so the whole family, a group of friends or colleagues fit in one vehicle, and the cost is split among everyone.

Below: how to get to each destination, which season to go in, what to bring and why a private minibus is almost always more convenient than a group tour.

A trip with a driver, not a guided tour

We are transport: a 13-seat Toyota Hiace and a driver who knows the way to the canyons and lakes, the dirt stretches and the places to stop. There is no tour guide on board — you choose the route, the pace and the stops. Where a lot is lost without someone to tell the story, such as at the Tanbaly petroglyphs, you hire a guide on site, at the museum. We do not sell individual seats: the whole minibus is yours, and there is one price — per vehicle.

How to get to the main sights of Semirechye

Charyn Canyon is about 215 km along the Kuldzha Highway, roughly three hours each way. The road is paved almost all the way to the canyon; the last stretch to the Valley of Castles is a short dirt road. The Kolsai Lakes lie deeper in the mountains, about 300 km via the village of Saty; the last kilometers are a climbing switchback road, best driven without hurrying. Kaindy Lake, with its sunken spruce forest, is close by, about 290 km: the minibus takes you to an agreed point, and from there you continue in a local off-road vehicle and walk the last section to the shore. Big Almaty Lake is only 40 km from the city center, but it is in the border zone near Kyrgyzstan, so keep your documents with you. Altyn-Emel, with the Singing Dune, is about 250 km away, and it is a national park with controlled entry. Medeu and Shymbulak are the closest, 15–25 km up the Malaya Almatinka gorge.

Where else we go for a day

Distant canyons and lakes are not the only option for a day off. Half an hour to an hour from the city are Butakovka Waterfall, Alma-Arasan Gorge, Kim-Asar Gorge and the Ayusay visitor center — people go there for a walk with the kids and for a barbecue. Toward evening, it is easy to go up Kok-Tobe or stroll through the Botanical Garden.

Groups and families with children more often choose recreation areas with pools and gazebos: Oi-Qaragai “Lesnaya Skazka”, Nasha Dacha, Tau-Dastarkhan, Country Village Resort, Turgen Dacha and the Birch Grove. In winter they are joined by the Ak-Bulak ski resort and 8 Lakes with its skating rink and tubing; in summer it is water and mountains: Bartogai Reservoir, Pervomayskie Ponds, Shukur Gorge and Talgar Gorge.

The best season for each trip

Charyn Canyon is open all year, but it is best in spring and fall (April–May, September–October): in summer it is hot on the canyon floor, so it is better to leave early in the morning. Kolsai and Kaindy are best from late May through September — in winter and the off-season we check the road from Saty to the lakes for your date, and the dirt road to Kaindy turns to mud after rain. Big Almaty Lake is beautiful all summer; on sunny days the water keeps its deep turquoise color. The Singing Dune in Altyn-Emel is more pleasant to visit in spring and fall, without the summer heat. The Medeu area and Shymbulak are open all year: in winter it is skiing and snowboarding, in summer walks and the cable car; the Medeu skating rink itself is closed for reconstruction until roughly 2027. The Chundzha hot springs are good in any season but are especially valued in fall and winter, when the warm mineral water contrasts with the cool air.

What to bring

• Documents. An ID card or a passport is required for Big Almaty Lake (border zone) and comes in handy at national park entrances.
• Cash. Entrance fees for the Charyn, Altyn-Emel and Kolsai national parks, as well as the off-road vehicle to Kaindy Lake, are paid on site.
• Comfortable shoes. The canyon floor at Charyn and the lakeside trails are easier going in sneakers or hiking boots.
• Warm clothes. In the mountains at Kolsai and Big Almaty Lake it is cool even in summer, so a light windbreaker is a good idea.
• Water, snacks, a hat and sunscreen — especially for the hot routes to the canyon and the dune.
• A swimsuit and a towel for the Chundzha hot springs and for swimming.

Private minibus or group tour: what’s the difference

On a shared bus tour, you are tied to the group’s schedule, wait for latecomers and stop where it suits the guide, not you. A private minibus removes these limits.

• Your own pace. Want to see the sunrise in the Valley of Castles? We leave at 5 a.m. Want to stay longer for photos? We stop for as long as you need.
• Pickup at your door. The driver picks up the whole group from your home or hotel and brings you back, with no changing vehicles and no long pickup rounds across the city.
• Just your group. Only your people are on board — family, friends or colleagues, no strangers.
• One price for the whole minibus. For a group of 8–13 people, a trip in one Hiace costs less than buying separate seats on a tour.
• A cabin built for long drives. Air conditioning, soft reclining seats and multimedia make the five hours to Kolsai noticeably easier.
• The driver knows the roads. He will tell you where to stop for lunch, where the best view is and how much time to allow for the way back.

How much a day trip costs — per vehicle and per person

The prices on the cards are approximate and for the whole 13-seat Toyota Hiace minibus. For long routes, that is a round trip in one day; for nearby spots around the city, it is pickup, waiting time on site and the drive back. The final amount depends on the destination, the number of stops, the waiting time on site and the season. National park entrance fees and the off-road vehicle to Kaindy are not included in the transport price and are paid separately. The price on the cards is for the whole minibus, so divide it by your group. Charyn from 80,000 ₸: for eight people, 10,000 ₸ each; for thirteen, about 6,150 ₸. Big Almaty Lake from 50,000 ₸: for ten people, 5,000 ₸. Kolsai from 100,000 ₸: for ten people, 10,000 ₸. National park entrance fees are paid separately on site. For two or three people, a seat on a shared group tour is cheaper — a whole vehicle pays off for a family or a group of friends.

How long the trip takes

The cards show one-way driving time, not the length of the whole trip. Charyn is about 3 hours away; with a walk in the canyon, plan on a full day, 10–12 hours. Kolsai is about 5 hours one way, so people leave early in the morning or stay overnight in Saty. The barrier at Big Almaty Lake is about an hour away, and everyone walks the last stretch to the lake. The gates of Altyn-Emel in the village of Basshi are about 4 hours away.
