The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Bartogai Reservoir is a man-made turquoise lake on the Chilik River, set among the mountains of Enbekshikazakh District. A high dam blocks the gorge, and downstream the water cuts through the rock to form a scenic canyon known as the Bartogai Canyon. The place is less famous than Charyn or Kolsai, so it’s quieter and less crowded. Bartogai is about 190 km away, roughly 3 hours one way.

We don’t go up to the Assy Plateau, though: the road up there is a dirt track for 4x4s.
How to get to Bartogai from Almaty
The route heads east from Almaty toward Shelek and on to the Chilik River valley. The distance is about 190 km, roughly 3 hours one way. Most of the way is paved, but closer to the reservoir and on the turnoff toward the Assy Plateau the road turns to dirt, rough in places. The Hiace handles a smooth, dry dirt road without trouble, but after rain it turns to mud — so we plan the trip around the weather, and the driver will tell you honestly how far you can realistically get.
Along the highway up to the Bartogai turnoff there are gas stations and cafés where you can stop and stretch your legs, but at the reservoir itself there are almost no facilities — it’s a wild place. Bring water, snacks and everything you need; the Hiace’s roomy luggage compartment takes food and gear for the whole group.
What to see at Bartogai
The main sight is the turquoise bowl of the reservoir itself, framed by the Toraigyr and Sogety mountains. The viewpoints by the dam give the best views, and from here you walk down to the canyon, where the Chilik River runs between rocks below the dam. A walk along the water, photos and the quiet of the wild — that’s the heart of the trip; people don’t usually swim here, it’s first and foremost a place for the views.
If you’re going for the whole day, it makes sense to combine Bartogai with nearby places. About 70 km to the east lies the Valley of Castles in Charyn Canyon, and on the way from Almaty you can stop at Turgen Gorge with its waterfalls. The high Assy Plateau isn’t part of these plans: the road up is for 4x4s only. Which option is realistic in one outing depends on the state of the dirt sections and your start time — we’ll discuss the plan in advance and allow enough hours for it.
Bartogai by minibus, your own car or a jeep tour
Bartogai has no public transport and no services, and it’s hard to get here on a shared group tour or by hitching a ride. With your own minibus that problem goes away: you leave when it suits you, stop for photos wherever you like and don’t depend on someone else’s schedule or group. For a party of 8–13, hiring a whole Hiace works out cheaper than paying for a seat on a jeep tour for each person.
A long drive with unpaved stretches is easier in a roomy, air-conditioned cabin than behind the wheel of your own car, which you’d hate to take down a rough dirt road.
