Driver, fuel and road included
Our regular driver with 20+ years of experience, fuel, toll sections and pickup in Almaty are all in the quoted price; you don’t pay extra per passenger. National park entrance fees, ski passes and a local off-road vehicle, if your route needs them, are not included.
Round trip
The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Charyn Canyon is the canyon of the Charyn River in Charyn National Park, about 215 km east of Almaty. Its main section is the Valley of Castles: a gorge about two kilometers long where wind and water have carved towers, arches and “fortress walls” out of red sandstone over millions of years. The drive from the city takes about 3 hours each way, so leaving at dawn and getting back by evening is quite doable — but doing it without rushing only works with your own transport, with no changing vehicles and no waiting for fellow travelers.

Almaty to Charyn: distance and travel time
The route heads east from Almaty toward Kegen — through the village of Shelek, over the Kokpek Pass and on to the turnoff for the canyon. The distance is about 215 km, roughly 3 hours on the road with a short stop. Along the way there are views of the steppe and the foothills, and just before the canyon there is a café and a gas station where it is easy to take a break and stretch your legs — the driver will point out the reliable places.
The Valley of Castles is part of Charyn National Park, so you pay an entrance fee at the gate (separately from the minibus price). A well-trodden path leads from the parking lot on the edge of the plateau to the viewpoints and the way down into the gorge — the driver drops you right at the entrance and waits in the parking lot while you explore. What to see in Charyn Canyon
The heart of the canyon is the Valley of Castles, about two kilometers long. The walk down from the plateau to the floor takes 15–20 minutes, and from there the trail winds between rock “castles” of reddish-orange sandstone to the bed of the Charyn River. The river itself is fast and cold, and there is a rest area by the water where it is nice to catch your breath before the climb back up.
If you have the time and energy, it is worth driving on to the relict Ash Grove farther down the Charyn — Sogdian ash trees that survived the Ice Age, one of the few such places on the planet. The grove is about 20 km away from the Valley of Castles, so it is best to discuss this extended route with the driver in advance — we will plan extra time for it. For a two-day trip, Charyn is often combined with Kaindy Lake and the Kolsai Lakes: the road there goes in the same direction, and a minibus with driver to Kaindy is booked as part of the same trip.
Private minibus to Charyn or a shared group tour
With your own minibus you are not tied to a tour schedule or to who else is in the group: you leave when it suits you, stop for photos on the pass and head back without waiting for latecomers. For a group of 8–13 people, hiring the whole Hiace works out cheaper than buying everyone a seat on a shared tour. If you like, you can stop at the turquoise Bartogai Reservoir on the way — it is about 70 km off the route.
In the heat this matters even more: air conditioning the whole way, cool water in the cabin and the option to leave the parking lot as soon as you are tired instead of waiting for a shared bus. The driver knows the road and the time when the Valley of Castles is least crowded — he will suggest the best departure time for your plan.
