The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Kaindy Lake is a common goal for day trips from Almaty, and people come for one view. Its main sight is the sunken spruce forest: dozens of dry Tian Shan spruce trunks rise straight out of the turquoise water like the masts of sunken ships. The lake sits at almost 2,000 meters in the Kungey Alatau mountains, not far from the Kolsai Lakes and the village of Saty.
The lake appeared in 1911: a powerful earthquake set off a landslide that dammed the gorge and flooded a spruce grove. The cold water preserved the trees — bare gray trunks stand above the surface, while underwater the branches still keep their needles. We plan the time for the drive from Almaty, the change of vehicles and the walk at the lake separately, based on conditions on your trip date. Among the mountain lakes of Almaty Region, Kaindy sits alongside Kolsai and Big Almaty Lake (BAO), and trips to them are often planned together.
Almaty to Kaindy: the road and stops
The route heads east from Almaty through the village of Shelek, then turns into the mountains toward the village of Saty — the “gateway” to the Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy. The total distance is about 290 km, roughly 4.5 hours with short stops. The first half is a smooth highway, then comes a scenic climb through the foothills of the Kungey Alatau. The same road leads to Charyn Canyon, so the two are often combined into a trip with an overnight stay.
Along the way there are cafés and gas stations for a break, a snack and a stretch — the driver will point out reliable places. We confirm how far the Hiace can go based on road conditions. From there to Kaindy you need a local off-road vehicle, and the last part to the shore is on foot; we discuss this stage in advance.
What makes Kaindy Lake famous
The name “Kaindy” means “birch” in Kazakh, yet the lake became famous for its sunken spruces. After the 1911 landslide, the water rose and covered part of the conifer forest; today only bleached trunks stick out above the surface, while deeper down, in the ice-cold clear water, whole branches with needles have survived. In calm weather the turquoise surface mirrors the mountains and the place looks almost unreal — which is why photographers and divers love Kaindy.
The Hiace leg ends at the agreed transfer point. From there you ride in a local off-road vehicle and walk the last stretch to the lake. How long this takes depends on the road and the drop-off point; we will explain the route in advance and help arrange the transfer. One minibus instead of several cars
The road to Kaindy is long and mountainous, so it is easier for the whole group to ride in one Toyota Hiace than to spread out over several cars. The cabin has air conditioning, soft reclining seats and room for backpacks, thermoses and warm clothes, which come in handy in the mountains even in summer. The driver knows the road through Shelek and Saty and handles the mountain switchbacks calmly.
For a group of 8–13 people, chartering the whole minibus means one price per vehicle instead of a ticket for each person, and you decide when to leave and how long to spend at the lake. If you like, Kaindy is easy to combine with the Kolsai Lakes — they are close by, near the same village of Saty, and a minibus with a driver to Kolsai can be part of the same trip.
