Almaty in 3 Days: What to See and Where to Go

Day 1: The city and the mountains above it

It makes sense to spend the first day close by: get your bearings in Almaty and go up into the mountains you can see from the city streets. Every stop on this day is within 25 kilometers of the center, so getting between them is easy.

Start with Kok-Tobe, a hill above the city with a viewing platform that you reach by cable car. From here you see all of Almaty at once and the wall of the Trans-Ili Alatau. Next comes the Medeu valley with its mudflow dam (about 15 kilometers, some 30 minutes from the center), and from there you can go higher, to the Shymbulak ski resort: in summer its cable car runs, with mountain views; in winter the slopes are open.

If you are not in the mood for mountains, spend the second half of the day in the city: the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen with Ascension Cathedral, Central Park, and the Green Bazaar with local food and souvenirs. A day like this is not tiring and sets you up well for the more active days ahead.

• Kok-Tobe — viewing platform and cable car, with a view over the whole city.
• Medeu (~15 km, ~30 minutes) — the dam and the gateway to the mountains; the valley is open year-round.
• Shymbulak (~25 km) — cable car and views in summer, ski slopes in winter.
• In the city: the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park, Ascension Cathedral, the Green Bazaar.

Day 2: Nearby gorges and a mountain lake

On day two, go a little farther — to the nearby gorges and a high-mountain lake, an hour to an hour and a half from the city. This is real nature, but without hours of driving, so you are back in Almaty by evening.

The most striking option is Big Almaty Lake (BAO), only about 28 kilometers south of the city: a turquoise bowl at 2,511 meters among spruces and rocks. The main thing to know: the upper section of the road is closed to vehicles, so the minibus takes the group up to the barrier in the gorge, and from there you walk to the water. It is a proper mountain hike of several hours, and it takes the whole day. Swimming in BAO is not allowed — it is the city’s drinking-water reservoir — but the views and photos are worth it. Above the lake the border zone begins, and you need an ID document to go there.

For those who prefer greenery and water, the alternative is Turgen Gorge, about 90 kilometers away, with a chain of waterfalls and easy walks in the forest. One of the two is realistic for a day: don’t try to combine BAO and Turgen, they lie in different directions.

• Big Almaty Lake (~28 km) — a turquoise lake at 2,511 m; swimming is prohibited.
• Turgen waterfalls (~90 km) — a chain of waterfalls in a green gorge; a full-day trip.
• Pick one per day — they lie on different sides of the city.

Day 3: A long trip — Charyn or Kolsai

Day three is for those with the energy for a long but rewarding trip. This is where the distant destinations begin — the ones many people come to Almaty for — and the difference in distances matters if you want to plan the day without rushing.

The most realistic option for a single day is Charyn Canyon: about 215 kilometers and around 3 hours each way. You have time to see the famous Valley of Castles without hurrying and be back by evening: leave early and allow two or three hours for the walk along the canyon floor. It is a full round trip in one long day.

The Kolsai Lakes and Kaindy Lake are farther — about 290–300 kilometers, a 4.5–5 hour drive each way. In one day that is pushing it: lots of road and little time at the lakes. If Kolsai and Kaindy are what you want, plan an overnight stay in Saty village and stretch the trip over two days — then it is a pleasure, not a race. So for the last day of a day-trip itinerary we recommend Charyn, and keep Kolsai as a reason to come back for an overnight trip.

• Charyn Canyon (~215 km, ~3 hours) — doable as a round trip in one day; the Valley of Castles.
• Kolsai and Kaindy (~290–300 km, 4.5–5 hours) — better with a night in Saty; one day is too tight.
• Leave early: the farther the destination, the more it matters to start in the morning.
• National park entrance fees are paid separately on site.

If you only have 1 or 2 days

The itinerary is built to be easy to shorten. For one day, take the day-one plan — the city and the mountains above it. That is enough to get a feel for Almaty and get up to the snowy peaks without going far, and for the city half of the day an hourly rental is enough.

For two days, add the second block — the nearby gorges and Big Almaty Lake. That makes a balanced pair of days: first the city, then the nature right next to it, with no exhausting drives. Leave Charyn and Kolsai for your next visit, or extend your trip to three or four days.

• 1 day — city and mountains: Kok-Tobe, Medeu, Shymbulak.
• 2 days — add BAO or Turgen.
• 3 days — finish at Charyn; Kolsai and Kaindy as a separate overnight trip.

Seasons: What to see when

Almaty is good at any time of year, but what you can do changes. In winter it is skiing at Shymbulak and the snowy road to BAO; the Medeu skating rink is closed for reconstruction until about 2027, but the valley and the dam are open. Summer opens up the lakes, plateaus and canyons, and in the fall Charyn is especially beautiful in golden tones, with the summer heat gone.

If you plan day three for a distant destination, keep the season in mind: the mountain lakes are best from June to September, when the dirt roads are dry, while Charyn and the plateaus are good from spring to fall. Long trips are possible in winter too, but the road is safer with a driver who has more than 20 years behind the wheel.

Getting around: A minibus with a driver for the day

On day one you can get around the city by taxi, but once the plan includes mountains, a lake and a canyon, it is easier to take a minibus with a driver for the whole day. The 13-seat Toyota Hiace fits a large family or group, and the driver knows the roads, the turnoffs and the photo spots.

The pricing is simple: you pay for the whole minibus, not per passenger — the amount is the same whether there are two of you or a full minibus. The schedule is flexible: you can stay longer at a place you like or change the order of stops during the day.

If your group is flying in, the same minibus will meet you in the arrivals hall with a name sign and take you to your hotel: an Almaty airport transfer is from 20,000 ₸ for the whole minibus.

• One minibus for your whole group of up to 13 — no need to arrange several cars.
• For a group, it usually costs less than several taxis.
• The driver knows the routes, the switchbacks and where to stop.
• Flexible schedule: you can combine several stops in one day.
