The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Big Almaty Lake is a turquoise alpine lake in the Bolshaya Almatinka River gorge, only ~40 km south of the city. It lies at about 2,510 meters in the Trans-Ili Alatau range, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Tian Shan. The color of the water changes through the year, from rich turquoise and emerald in early summer to a deep blue-green by autumn — the shade depends on the water level, the light and the season. BAO is usually where people start exploring the mountain lakes of Almaty Region: it is the closest one to the city.
The road to the lake itself is closed to vehicles. Ile-Alatau National Park has shut the upper section because of rockfalls and the poor state of the road surface; only park service vehicles, the border outpost and the research stations may drive through. This applies to everyone — private cars, taxis and tour minibuses alike. Visitors cover the last kilometers to the water on foot, and it is a proper mountain climb, not a stroll.
Almaty to BAO: how far by minibus, where the walk begins
The route starts in the city, climbs along Al-Farabi Avenue and then turns into the Bolshaya Almatinka gorge. From there the road follows the river past a cascade of hydropower plants and gradually becomes a winding mountain road that keeps gaining altitude. By this road it is about 40 km from the city to the lake, but you cannot drive all of it: higher up the gorge there is a barrier, and the upper section is closed to all tourist vehicles.
The minibus takes the group up to that barrier — about an hour from the city, with stops at viewpoints. From there you walk to the lake: the trail keeps climbing, so allow several hours each way and wear hiking shoes, not city shoes. We check the drop-off point and the current access rules for the gorge before every trip — the rules here change, and it is better to find out before the trip than on the spot.
What to see at the lake and nearby
The main sight is the view of the lake from the dam and the viewing platforms: the turquoise water framed by Sovetov Peak (about 4,317 m), Ozyorny Peak and Turist Peak. On a clear day the water seems to glow against the dark slopes. If you want warm water as well as views, the Alma-Arasan hot springs are next door in Prokhodnoye Gorge: the road there is open, and we run trips to the springs by minibus with a driver — a good option if a hike is not part of your plan.
Above the lake, on the slope, stands the Tian Shan Astronomical Observatory, and farther into the mountains the road continues to Ozyorny Pass and the high-altitude Cosmostation. These upper sections are both a border zone and the same road closed to traffic, so they are planned as a proper mountain hike, not a stop along the way.
How to get to the Cosmostation: how far the minibus goes
“Cosmostation” is what people in Almaty call the Tian Shan High-Altitude Research Station on Zhusaly-Kezen Pass, about 3,300 meters above sea level and just over 10 kilometers farther up from the lake. The way there is a continuation of the same road through Big Almaty Gorge: past BAO, past the observatory and on up the switchbacks to the pass. You cannot drive it in a minibus, taxi or private car: the upper section is closed by the national park, and the area itself is a border zone with a checkpoint on the way.
We cover the lower half of the route — from your door in Almaty to the barrier in the gorge where driving ends — and wait there with your things all day. The climb to the station is planned as a proper mountain hike, or booked with operators who have a prepared off-road vehicle and a separate permit; we do not drive up there and will not promise to. If climbing to 3,300 meters on foot is not in your plans but you want to see the mountains, the honest choice is a place we can drive you all the way to — Medeu (from there, a cable car goes up to Shymbulak), the Turgen waterfalls or the Alma-Arasan hot springs.
Minibus, your own car or a taxi to BAO
The road up the gorge is a winding mountain road with a noticeable change in altitude. Not every sedan, and not every taxi driver, is keen to go up, especially in early spring or late autumn, when snow and ice linger higher up. Our driver takes this route regularly and knows where to slow down and where it is easiest to stop for photos.
The main difference, though, is what happens while you are up top. A taxi leaves right away, and after several hours of climbing you would have to find a car back down in a gorge where the phone signal is patchy. Our Hiace stays at the drop-off point with your bags, warm clothes and thermos: come down, get in and head home. For a group of 8–13 people, one minibus with waiting time is both more convenient and cheaper than several taxis both ways.
One more thing — documents: the area is part of the border territory near Kyrgyzstan, so every passenger must carry an ID. We will tell you whether border-zone permits apply on your date, so there are no surprises on the spot.

Is the walk to the lake hard, and who is it for?
It is a mountain climb along a road that gains altitude, not a stroll: you need hiking shoes, water and time to spare. Adults and teenagers can manage it, but with small children, a stroller, or heart or joint problems, it is better to choose a destination with a short walk from the vehicle — for example, Medeu, Alma-Arasan or the Turgen waterfalls.
Can you drive us to the Cosmostation or the observatory?
No — and it is not about what the vehicle can handle. The road above the barrier is closed to all tourist traffic: no minibus, taxi or private car can drive up. We take the group to the barrier in Big Almaty Gorge (about an hour from the city) and wait there all day; the climb to the observatory and the station at 3,300 meters is done on foot or with operators who have an off-road vehicle and a permit.
Do you need a border-zone permit for BAO?
The area is part of the border territory near Kyrgyzstan, so every passenger must bring an ID (passport). Going farther in — to the observatory and the pass — may require a separate border-zone permit. The rules change from time to time, so we will tell you in advance what applies on your date.
Can you swim in Big Almaty Lake?
No. The lake is a drinking-water reservoir for Almaty, so swimming and going down to the water’s edge are prohibited. The water is ice-cold all year anyway. The dam and the viewpoints, on the other hand, give the best views of the turquoise water.
When should we go, and what should we wear?
The lake is beautiful in any season, but the water is at its most vivid in early summer. At 2,510 m it is noticeably colder and windier than in the city, and snow can lie higher up even in summer — bring a warm jacket, a windbreaker and comfortable shoes for the climb, even if Almaty is hot.
