The 13-seat Toyota Hiace takes no other passengers. One person or 13 — the price is the same; we don’t sell individual seats or tickets. More than 13 people — we’ll find a partner minibus for your date; on short routes two runs in a row also work.
Driver, fuel and road included
Our regular driver with 20+ years of experience, fuel, toll sections and pickup in Almaty are all in the quoted price; you don’t pay extra per passenger. National park entrance fees, ski passes and a local off-road vehicle, if your route needs them, are not included.
Round trip
The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Bags and gear go in a separate compartment. If everyone has a large suitcase or a stroller, we take up to 9 people; with skis and snowboards, 9–10. Tell us what you’re bringing when you book.

Trips in the city and nearby are paid after the trip. Long intercity trips and trips of several days need a partial prepayment to hold the date, the rest before departure. Companies get an invoice, a contract and closing documents.

Lake Issyk lies in the Ile-Alatau gorge of the same name, at about 1,750 meters, surrounded by Tian Shan spruces. The water changes color from emerald to deep blue depending on the light, and there are gazebos and picnic spots along the shore — so people come here not to conquer a peak but to spend a relaxed day outdoors. From Almaty to the lake is about 70 km via the town of Esik (Kazakh for “door”), a drive of around an hour and a half, so you can easily go and come back home in one day — it’s one of the most accessible mountain lakes of Almaty Region.
The lake has a dramatic history: in 1963 a powerful mudflow all but destroyed it, and today’s lake is the result of restoration — the dam and water works were completed by the early 1990s. Today it’s a well-kept recreation area: gazebos, paths along the shore and parking by the water. On a shared group tour you travel on someone else’s schedule and with strangers; when the minibus is yours, you choose the departure time, how long to stay by the water and when to head home.
Lake Issyk: how long it takes and what’s on the way
The route heads east from Almaty along the Kuldzha Highway toward the town of Esik, and from there the road climbs into the mountains through Issyk Gorge right to the lake. The distance is about 70 km, roughly an hour and a half: the first part is on a flat highway, and the last few kilometers are switchbacks along the Issyk River. It’s paved almost all the way to the lake, and the driver knows the road.
In Esik, on the way, there are shops and cafés where you can pick up water, ice and picnic food and stretch your legs before the climb into the mountains. The lake is part of a nature park, and there’s an entrance fee at the gate — you pay it on site, separately from the minibus price. The driver will drop you at the developed area and wait in the parking lot while you relax on the shore.
Things to do at Lake Issyk
The main thing here is the shore itself: a walk along the water, photos of the turquoise surface against the spruces and a picnic in one of the gazebos. A path runs around part of the lake, and there are viewpoints that take in the whole lake in its granite bowl. Swimming in Issyk is chilly even in summer — the water is glacial — so most people come for the views, the air and a rest by the water, not for a beach.
If you want to add some activity, there are hiking trails higher up the gorge with views of the mountain slopes — you can discuss a short walk with the driver in advance to allow time for it. For longer trails through the conifers, people head to neighboring Talgar Gorge. With children, Issyk works well precisely because it’s unhurried: level paths along the shore, shade from the spruces and spots to spread out a blanket and have a relaxed snack.
Issyk is not Issyk-Kul
The two names are often confused, but the places are completely different. Lake Issyk is a small mountain lake in the Ile-Alatau, just ~70 km from Almaty — a day trip. Issyk-Kul is a huge lake in Kyrgyzstan, about 450 km from Almaty and several hours’ drive across the border — that’s a full-scale beach vacation. If it’s the Kyrgyz “sea” you’re after, we have a separate destination — Almaty to Issyk-Kul transfer — with its own timing and price.
For a day outdoors without a long drive or a border crossing, Lake Issyk is just right. In your own Hiace you drive straight to the shore, with no changes in Esik and no waiting for a passing car, and in the evening you return home in the same minibus.
