Issyk-Kul is the region’s top lake for a summer holiday by the water. It is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world: the water is slightly salty, clean and bright blue, and the lake almost never freezes — hence its name, “warm lake.” Every summer the north shore, with the resorts of Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri, draws families and groups from Almaty: white beaches, water warmed to +22–25 °C and the Tian Shan mountains on both shores. The lake is in Kyrgyzstan, and the road from Almaty is about 450 km with a border crossing, so the easiest way to go is in your own minibus.

How to get from Almaty to Issyk-Kul: the road and the border
The most popular route goes through the Kordai border crossing, on to Bishkek, then through the Boom Gorge along the Chu River to the north shore of the lake — to Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri. The distance is about 450 km, roughly 7–8 hours on the road. The main variable is the line at the Kazakhstan–Kyrgyzstan border: on weekends and at the height of the season the checkpoint takes longer, so it is best to leave early in the morning. There is also a second, eastern route — via Kegen, the Karkara crossing and Tyup — more scenic and usually less busy, but this crossing is not open around the clock; we will suggest which one to take for your dates. On the way through Bishkek, near Tokmok, you can detour to the Burana Tower — an 11th-century minaret on the UNESCO list; we plan the stop when you book.
To cross the border, citizens of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan usually need only their national ID card, and a child needs their own document — a birth certificate or a passport. Citizens of other countries usually need an international passport; Russians aged 14 and over can also use their internal passport, while Russian children under 14 have needed an international passport since January 20, 2026. It is best to check the current requirements in advance. Along the way there are cafés and gas stations where it is easy to take a break and stretch your legs — the driver will point out the reliable places and help you find your way at the checkpoint.
A holiday on Issyk-Kul: Cholpon-Ata and Bosteri
The north shore is the center of beach life. Cholpon-Ata is the main resort town: a waterfront promenade, water attractions, pedal boats and motorboats, the Ruh Ordo cultural complex right on the shore and an open-air petroglyph museum. Ten kilometers to the east is Bosteri, with most of the resorts and hotels, the Golden Sands water park and a big Ferris wheel overlooking the lake. The beaches here are sandy and clean, and the water is especially clear. We also drive to the other villages on the north shore — Tamchy, Chok-Tal, Bulan-Sogottu, Kara-Oi and Sary-Oi: name your resort when you book, and we will take you to its gates.
The swimming season runs roughly from mid-June to the end of August: the water warms up to +22–25 °C, and the days stay hot. Beyond the beach, the lake is a good base for trips into nature — the Grigorievka and Semenovka gorges, waterfalls and mountain rivers of the Tian Shan are an hour’s drive from the shore, and at the eastern end of the lake is Karakol, with Jeti-Oguz and Altyn-Arashan. If you plan to do more than lie on the beach, the driver and the minibus can stay with you, and you can put together your own program of trips around the area.
We also drive to the south shore — to Tamga, Tosor, Kaji-Say and Bokonbaevo; it is farther than the north shore, so we will quote a price based on the route and dates.
Minibus, scheduled bus or your own car
A scheduled bus runs on its own timetable, in a shared cabin, with a ticket for each person. In your own car you have to stand in the checkpoint line yourself and drive the whole way back while tired. Your own minibus takes the group from your door in Almaty straight to your resort on the shore, leaves when it suits you, and at the wheel and at the border you have a driver who knows this route.
A note for those who searched for a “bus to Issyk-Kul from Almaty”: we don’t sell individual seats. Scheduled and sleeper buses mean a ticket per person and someone else’s timetable; with us you get the whole Toyota Hiace for your group at one price, with pickup at your door and the same cabin after the border.
