Alakol is a large salt lake on the border of the Zhetysu and Abai regions. People come not just to swim: the water is highly mineralized, and the shore is covered with black pebbles long believed to have healing properties. The season is short — June to September, when the lake warms up — and for those months Akshi and Kabanbay turn into busy resort villages. The drive from Almaty takes about 8 hours each way, so the most comfortable way to go is your own minibus: direct, with stops whenever you like and room for luggage for several days.
You leave when it suits you — many groups set off late in the evening or at night to sleep through most of the drive and reach the shore by morning — and the cabin has air conditioning, a media system and reclining seats. Almaty to Alakol: the road and stops
The route runs northeast through Taldykorgan and on to Usharal, the nearest town to the lake. The distance is about 600 km, roughly 8 hours with stops for rest, food and fuel. It is the longest of our lake trips, so the driver plans breaks in advance and suggests reliable cafés along the way, so the drive does not wear you out.
The lake has two main resort centers: the village of Akshi on the south shore and Kabanbay on the northeast shore. Akshi is in the Alakol District of Zhetysu Region, while the resort village of Kabanbay is in the Makanchi District of Abai Region. Both have wild beaches as well as developed recreation areas with holiday resorts. Getting from one shore to the other by road means a long detour around the lake, so it is best to choose your village before you leave.
Akshi, Koktuma or Kabanbay: where exactly we drive
Akshi is the most popular resort village on the south shore and the closest by road via Usharal: it has the most resorts, developed beaches and cafés, and it is where most of our groups go. Koktuma is a village on the same south shore east of Akshi, farther along the road from Usharal, quieter and with wilder beaches. Kabanbay is on the northeast shore, farther still by road, with its own recreation areas.
We drive to the gate of your resort or to the specific stretch of beach you name. The quoted price — from 110,000 ₸ round trip — applies to the nearer part of the shore; for Kabanbay, or for a trip with stops along the shore, we price the route. If you are still choosing a village, we will explain the differences and suggest which suits families with children and which suits a large group.
What Alakol is known for
The main reason to come here is the lake’s reputation for healing. Alakol’s water is highly mineralized and rich in salts, and the gently sloping shore is covered with fine black pebbles of volcanic origin. By local tradition, people warm themselves on the sun-heated pebbles and bathe in the water for their skin and joints. No one offers scientific guarantees, but people come back year after year for that “spa resort” feeling.
The swimming season at Alakol is short: the water is warm enough from about June to September, with the peak in July and August — the same weeks that fill up the closer Lake Balkhash, where we also drive groups by minibus with a driver. At that time the shore is crowded and resorts are fully booked, so plan the trip and your accommodation in advance. On our side, we fit departure and return to your holiday dates.
Minibus or train to Alakol
The train takes about eighteen hours versus eight by road, runs on its own schedule and not every day, and from the station to your resort you still need a transfer. Add a shared carriage, suitcases and a separate ticket for every passenger.
