Taldykorgan is the administrative center of Zhetysu Region and one of the regular intercity routes from Almaty. People go there to visit family, for work, for study and for sports tournaments, and in summer they often continue on to Lake Alakol. The distance is about 260 km, and the drive on the upgraded highway takes about 3–4 hours, so for a large group it’s easier to travel in your own minibus — no changes, stops whenever you like and luggage that doesn’t have to sit on your lap.
You leave when it suits you, not when the bus station timetable says: the cabin has air conditioning, a media system and soft reclining seats, the luggage goes in a separate compartment, and you can stop on the highway wherever you need to. For a family or a work team it’s more relaxed than a scheduled bus, which will drop everyone at the bus station anyway.
The Almaty – Taldykorgan route: the road and stops
The route follows the A-3 highway (Almaty – Ust-Kamenogorsk) through Konaev, formerly Kapchagay, and then northeast along the foothills of the Dzungarian Alatau. The distance is about 260 km, roughly 3–4 hours depending on traffic leaving the city. The road has been upgraded in recent years and is smooth, so the trip is comfortable, without bumps or long detours.
Along the way there are gas stations and roadside cafés where you can take a break, grab a bite and stretch your legs — the driver knows reliable places. Almost the entire highway to Taldykorgan is a toll road — the Almaty – Konaev and Konaev – Taldykorgan sections — and the driver takes care of paying, so you don’t have to think about it. If you plan to go further, to Lake Alakol by minibus, Taldykorgan becomes the logical halfway point and a convenient place to stay overnight.
The Almaty – Taldykorgan route runs all year, not just in vacation season: people travel here on business, to study and to see family in winter and summer alike. In the cold months we set off in a vehicle prepared for the highway and allow a little extra time in case of snow or ice, so you arrive calmly and without rushing.
What to see in Taldykorgan and Zhetysu Region
Taldykorgan is a green, quiet city on the Karatal River. Its best-known spot is Seven Fountains Square with the Fountain of Seven Rivers, which symbolizes the seven rivers of Zhetysu, or Semirechye (“Seven Rivers”). Nearby runs the Karatal embankment with walking and bike paths, and not far away are Central Park and the regional history and local lore museum with exhibits about the region. In the evening the center is tastefully lit, and it’s nice to take a stroll after the drive.
The city is a convenient starting point for the region’s natural sights: the mountain town of Tekeli at the foot of the range and the healing springs of Kapal. Taldykorgan often serves as a base for routes around Zhetysu — from here, both Lake Alakol and the north of Zhetysu Region are closer. If you have a couple of free hours before heading back, the driver can suggest where it’s worth dropping by.
To Tekeli and Kora Gorge
Tekeli is a mountain town 40 km beyond Taldykorgan, at the entrance to Kora Gorge in the Zhetysu Alatau; from Almaty it’s about 300 km and roughly four hours’ drive. People go there to see family, on business and to the mountains. We drive to an address in town and to the start of the gorge, as far as the decent road goes; we’ll quote the price based on the address.
Two caveats so the trip doesn’t fall through. Kora Gorge is a border zone: everyone needs documents, and foreigners may need a permit, so check this in advance. And you can’t drive an ordinary vehicle from Tekeli to Burkhan-Bulak, the highest waterfall in Kazakhstan: a road through the gorge is under construction and is promised by the end of 2027, and for now people get there on foot, on horseback or by 4x4 via Kapal. The minibus will take the group to the point where such a route begins.
Minibus, scheduled bus or taxi to Taldykorgan
A scheduled bus runs on a timetable and drops you at the bus station, from which you have to make your own way to your address. A regular taxi on the Almaty – Taldykorgan route can’t fit a big family with luggage, and splitting up into several cars costs more and is more hassle. Your own minibus takes the whole group from your door in Almaty straight to your destination in Taldykorgan, leaves when it suits you and, if needed, waits on site. When families move, pets ride along too — we arrange pet transport in advance so there’s room for everyone.
