Price per seat vs. price per vehicle: what’s the difference

Intercity travel comes in two formats, and this is usually where the confusion starts. The first is a seat in a shared vehicle: you pay for yourself, but it leaves when it fills up, the carrier decides the route and stops, and strangers ride next to you the whole way. The second is a whole vehicle for your group: you choose the departure time, the stops and the pickup address.

We work only the second way. We price the whole Hiace, however many people ride in it: you know the amount in advance, before departure, and nobody recalculates it on the road.

Travel times and prices for 14 destinations

Below are the destinations people ask about most. Distance is one way, and time excludes stops for food and fuel; for cross-border routes, each line says whether border control is included. The price is always for the whole minibus: for some routes it’s round trip, for others one way, and each line says which.

The road itself also suggests the format: nearby routes like Konaev and Taldykorgan usually fit into one day including the return, while legs longer than a thousand kilometers mean a trip with an overnight stay and several days of the driver’s time.

The price, though, doesn’t simply follow the kilometers. It depends on the condition of the highway, mountain sections, a border crossing and whether the driver has to stay overnight on the way — so a route that’s shorter on the map can easily cost more than a long run on a straight road.

• Konaev, formerly Kapchagay: 70–80 km, about an hour and a half. From 60,000 ₸ round trip for the whole vehicle. The shortest intercity trip: in summer people even go to the reservoir for half a day.
• Bishkek: about 240 km and four hours plus the Kordai border. From 90,000 ₸ one way, one amount for the whole group.
• Chundzha hot springs: about 250 km, roughly four hours. From 140,000 ₸ round trip, from 70,000 ₸ one way.
• Taldykorgan: about 260 km, three to four hours. From 90,000 ₸ round trip, with both directions already in that figure.
• Khorgos: about 330 km, four and a half hours. From 100,000 ₸ one way for the whole vehicle.
• Karakol in Kyrgyzstan: about 360 km, but with the mountain road and the border it’s almost eight hours. From 150,000 ₸ one way.
• Issyk-Kul: about 450 km, seven to eight hours including the border crossing. From 150,000 ₸ one way per vehicle.
• Balkhash: about 470 km, six hours on a straight highway. From 150,000 ₸ round trip.
• Taraz: about 500 km, six to seven hours. From 110,000 ₸ one way.
• Alakol: about 600 km, eight hours via Taldykorgan and Usharal. From 110,000 ₸ round trip.
• Shymkent: about 700 km, eight to nine hours. From 150,000 ₸ one way.
• Karaganda: about 1,000 km, 12–13 hours on the road. From 160,000 ₸ for the round trip.

Why we quote a price per vehicle, not per seat

A price per vehicle has a quality a price per seat doesn’t: it doesn’t grow as you go. Two more people join the day before departure — the amount is the same. Someone drops out at the last minute — the amount is also the same, and we tell you that up front. You pay for the minibus and driver being taken up by your trip from departure to return.

It also explains what we don’t do: we don’t sell individual seats and don’t pick up anyone along the way to “fill up” the cabin. Starting prices for other routes and pricing formats are in our minibus hire price list.

• The price is fixed before departure and doesn’t depend on whether the cabin is full.
• You can change who’s coming right up to the last day — the amount isn’t recalculated.
• Luggage, child seats and stops on the way aren’t charged separately.

Why long-distance prices say “from”

Long-distance destinations have “from” in front of the price, and the reason is simple. A thousand kilometers or more means 12–16 hours on the road one way, and a trip like that is no longer a simple run from point A to point B.

The “from” figure is an estimate for the route with the vehicle returning to Almaty. What pushes it up is how many days you’ll stay, whether the driver waits for you or drives back empty, whether an overnight stop on the way is needed, and the season you travel in. Luggage, kids and stops: what a private minibus gives you

Money isn’t the only reason groups choose a vehicle of their own. First, luggage. People head to the lake with bags for several days, food and inflatable swim rings, and the Hiace has a separate compartment for all of it: nobody holds a backpack on their lap for six hours.

Second, the group stays together. A family with kids and grandparents rides together in one cabin, not half here and half somewhere behind. Third, stops: if you want to stretch your legs, grab a bite at a roadside café or photograph the steppe at sunrise, we stop, because there are no strangers on board to accommodate.

How to book an intercity trip and what to tell us for a quote

To give you an exact amount, we need five details, and the quote usually takes a couple of minutes on WhatsApp. The more specific the question, the more accurate the answer: “how much to Taraz” and “how much to Taraz on Friday morning for nine people, returning on Sunday” are two different quotes.

It’s best to book intercity trips in advance, especially for weekends, holidays and May through September: those dates get booked first. Payment is in cash, by Kaspi transfer (a Kazakh banking app) or by bank invoice if a company is arranging the trip.
