Driver, fuel and road included
Our regular driver with 20+ years of experience, fuel, toll sections and pickup in Almaty are all in the quoted price; you don’t pay extra per passenger. National park entrance fees, ski passes and a local off-road vehicle, if your route needs them, are not included.

The round trip is one price. Waiting time on site and the driver’s overnight stay, if you travel for several days, are agreed when booking.

Balkhash is one of the most popular lakeside getaways from Almaty. Warm shallow water, sandy beaches and sunsets over the lake draw families and groups all summer. The drive takes about 6 hours each way, so the simplest way to go is your own minibus — no changing vehicles, stops whenever you like, and luggage you don’t have to hold on your lap.
You leave when it suits you — even at 5 a.m. to be on the beach by lunchtime — and the cabin has air conditioning, a media system and reclining seats. For a large group this is both cheaper and more comfortable than the train.
Almaty to Balkhash: what to know about the road
The route follows the highway through Kapchagay (Konaev) and then north. The distance is about 470 km, roughly 6 hours with short stops. Along the way there are cafés and gas stations for a break, a snack and a stretch — the driver will point out reliable places.
Most groups head to Priozersk, Balkhash-9 and the beaches along the south shore. If you have not decided exactly where yet, we will walk you through the options and help you pick a beach for your kind of trip: with children, with friends or camping.
When to go to Balkhash, the road and what to bring
The swimming season here is roughly the same as at the more distant Lake Alakol, where we also drive groups by minibus with a driver — from mid-June to early September. The lake is shallow: it warms up quickly and cools down just as fast. July and August are the busiest months on the shore, and places at resorts are booked up early; September is quieter, the water still holds its warmth, but the evenings are already cool. In winter people come to Balkhash for ice fishing — that is a different trip, with its own gear and its own schedule. The water in the western part of the lake, where people usually go for a beach holiday, is almost fresh, so you do not need to rinse off salt after swimming.
The road to the lake itself is paved — it is part of the highway to Astana — but the turnoffs to wild beaches often run over dirt and sand. The Hiace is not an off-road vehicle: we reach well-worn spots easily but do not drive into deep sand, so tell us in advance which resort or beach we are going to. If it is on the Priozersk side, check the entry rules with your resort separately — access is not open everywhere there. On the beach it helps to have an umbrella or awning (there are almost no trees), plenty of drinking water, charcoal or firewood for the grill, mosquito repellent for the evening and a windbreaker: there is nearly always a breeze off the water, even in the heat.
Minibus, train or marshrutka to Balkhash
The train only goes as far as the station, and from there you still have to get to the water — that last stretch eats up the difference in price. A marshrutka means cramped seats, a fixed schedule, strangers and luggage on your lap. Your own minibus takes your group from your door in Almaty right to the shore, leaves when it suits you and waits at the lake if needed.
For a group of 8–13 people, chartering the whole minibus costs less than individual tickets, and the trip is easier: air conditioning in the heat, music or movies on the way, and no changing vehicles with your bags in the sun.
