The Almaty to Karaganda road: what to plan for
The route runs north via Balkhash on the M-36 highway — about 1,000 km and roughly 12–13 hours on the road, including stops for rest, food and fuel. The road is mostly steppe and monotonous, so the driver plans breaks in advance at tried-and-tested places where you can properly stretch your legs and eat. It is a serious drive, so rest breaks for the driver and, if needed, an overnight stop on the way are agreed before departure to keep the trip safe.
Because the road is so long, people usually leave for Karaganda early in the morning or the evening before — that way the group arrives fresh for the start of the meeting, classes or event. The train takes roughly as long but is tied to a timetable and a shared car; flying is faster, but it means a ticket for everyone, the airline’s baggage allowance and transfers to the airport and from the airport in Karaganda — for a large group with luggage, the trip gets noticeably more complicated. Across the steppe: weather, stops and what to keep with you
In summer, the main challenge on this route is the heat: the steppe stretches to the horizon, there is no shade, and in the middle of the day only the air conditioning helps. In winter it is the opposite: open stretches drift over with snow, the highway is closed to traffic in strong winds, and it makes more sense to postpone departure by a day than to sit in the snow on the shoulder. We check the forecast and the road report the day before and will tell you in advance if those particular dates are a bad idea. The easiest months for this drive are May, June and September: not too hot, light until late, and the road is dry.
There are gas stations and cafés on the highway, but only near villages, so the driver plans breaks in advance rather than stopping “wherever.” Bring water, snacks, a charger and a neck pillow into the cabin — over twelve hours, it makes a real difference. A bank card does not always work on the road: the internet in the villages is patchy, so keep some cash on you. In winter, keep your warm jacket next to you rather than in the trunk — in Karaganda the frost and wind are harsher than in Almaty, and you feel it on the short walk from the vehicle to the door.
