How to get to Ust-Kamenogorsk from Almaty
The route runs northeast through Taldykorgan, Ayagoz and on to Ust-Kamenogorsk — around 1,080 km and roughly 13–14 hours on the move, including stops. It’s a long road, not something you can dash through in a day: most people leave Almaty early in the morning to cover the bulk of the drive in daylight. Along the highway there are cafés, gas stations and rest areas — the driver plans breaks in advance and knows reliable places to eat and stretch your legs.

Seasons, the road and border-zone permits
East Kazakhstan is noticeably harsher than the south: winter here is long, with hard frosts and blizzards, and the stretches beyond Ayagoz drift over so badly that road services sometimes close them to traffic. We plan a winter departure around highway reports and postpone it if the road is impassable. Summer is easier — warm, light until late — and June through August is when most people head to Bukhtarma and the Altai villages. In spring and fall the weather is changeable: above freezing on the plains, but already sleet on the approaches to the mountains, so extra time in the schedule never hurts.
It’s paved the whole way, but unevenly: some sections between Ayagoz and Ust-Kamenogorsk have been under repair for years, and the actual travel time depends on where work is going on at the moment. Farther east begins the border strip — trips toward Katon-Karagay, Markakol and neighboring border districts require a border-zone permit. It’s obtained in advance from the border service; check the procedure and timing when planning — this usually can’t be sorted out at the last minute.
