Semey (formerly Semipalatinsk) is an old city on the Irtysh River and, since 2022, the center of Abai Region; it is home to the literary memorial museums of Abai and Dostoevsky. Almaty to Semey: distance and drive time
The route runs northeast through Taldykorgan and Ayagoz and on to Semey — about 1,000 km and roughly 12–13 hours on the move, including stops. It is a long haul that cannot be done there and back in one day: most groups leave Almaty early in the morning to cover most of the highway in daylight. Along the way there are cafés, gas stations and places to rest — the driver picks convenient points in advance and plans breaks around your group.
Because the trip is so long, the driver may stay overnight in Semey or on the way — normal for this distance, and we agree on it in advance. If you have business in the city rather than just a round trip, the vehicle stays with you for the agreed time and drives the group around locally. Season, road and what to bring
In the east the seasons change sharply. Winters are snowy and frosty, the stretch beyond Ayagoz gets snowdrifts, and in a blizzard the road services close the highway — when they do, the departure is postponed; there is no point driving against the weather. In summer the highway is hot and dusty, but it stays light until about nine in the evening, and the long haul goes more smoothly. The most pleasant time is May, early June and September: no scorching heat, dry roads, and the Irtysh and the pine forest around Semey at their best.
The road is paved for the entire thousand kilometers, but unevenly: some stretches are new, others have been under repair for years, and the real travel time depends on this more than on speed. The Taldykorgan–Ayagoz stretch is long and sparsely populated: cell coverage drops out in places and gas stations are fewer than in the south, so the driver plans fuel and rest stops in advance. No internal permits are needed — an identity document is enough — and a child’s birth certificate will come in handy when checking into a hotel. On a road like this, cash for roadside cafés and a thermos are useful — decent coffee between villages is harder to find than you might think.
