The 13-seat Toyota Hiace takes no other passengers. One person or 13 — the price is the same; we don’t sell individual seats or tickets. More than 13 people — we’ll find a partner minibus for your date; on short routes two runs in a row also work.
Driver, fuel and road included
Our regular driver with 20+ years of experience, fuel, toll sections and pickup in Almaty are all in the quoted price; you don’t pay extra per passenger. National park entrance fees, ski passes and a local off-road vehicle, if your route needs them, are not included.

The price is for the one-way drive. A return trip, waiting time on site or a trip of several days are priced separately — tell us your plan and we’ll suggest an option.
Luggage: 13 traveling light, up to 9 with suitcases
Bags and gear go in a separate compartment. If everyone has a large suitcase or a stroller, we take up to 9 people; with skis and snowboards, 9–10. Tell us what you’re bringing when you book.
Payment: cash, Kaspi or invoice
Trips in the city and nearby are paid after the trip. Long intercity trips and trips of several days need a partial prepayment to hold the date, the rest before departure. Companies get an invoice, a contract and closing documents.
We take your group from Almaty to Karakol on a private run: a 13-seat Toyota Hiace with a driver, from 150,000 ₸ for the whole minibus, one way. We pick you up at your door, cross the border with you and drive you to your hotel or lodge — no changing vehicles at the border checkpoint and no hunting for transport in an unfamiliar city.
Karakol sits at the far end of Issyk-Kul, at the foot of the Terskey Ala-Too range, and serves as the base for almost everything people come to eastern Kyrgyzstan for: trekking to Altyn-Arashan with its hot springs, the red rocks of Jeti-Oguz, the Ak-Suu gorge, and the ski base in winter. The town itself is worth a stop too — the wooden Holy Trinity Church and the Dungan Mosque, built by Chinese craftsmen without a single nail, stand a couple of blocks apart.
There are two roads from Almaty, and we drive both. The short one goes through Shelek and Kegen straight to the eastern shore of the lake: about 360 km. The long one goes through Kordai and Bishkek along the entire north shore: more kilometers, but it’s the more familiar main road, with more cafés along the way. We’ll tell you which one suits your dates when we quote the trip.
Two routes to Karakol: via Kegen and via Bishkek
The eastern route runs through Shelek and Kegen to the Karkara border checkpoint, then on to Tyup and along the shore to Karakol. It’s the shortest road — about 360 km — and also the most scenic: part of the way runs through foothills and valleys, and off to the side of the highway you pass the turnoff to the Kolsai Lakes — that’s a separate trip by minibus with a driver. The hours of the Karkyra road checkpoint change and are sometimes limited, so we check its schedule before every trip. If it’s closed at the time you need, we take the northern route through Kordai — you’ll find out before departure, not at the border.
The northern route is longer — through Kordai, Bishkek and the Boom Gorge, then along the whole of Issyk-Kul via Cholpon-Ata. It comes to about 600 km, but the Kordai checkpoint is always open, and it’s easy to make a stop in Bishkek or on the north shore. If you’re heading to the ski slopes in winter, this is usually the option that works.
What you need to cross the border
Citizens of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan usually need only their ID card; a child needs their own document — a birth certificate or a passport. Citizens of other countries usually need a passport; Russians aged 14 and over can also use their internal passport, while Russian children under 14 need an international passport only, as of January 20, 2026. Requirements change from time to time, so check the current rules before you travel: for our part, we remind you about documents when we confirm your booking.
Nobody can tell in advance how long the border checkpoint will take: on weekends and at the height of the season the lines are longer. So we build in time for the border and start early — that way you reach Karakol in daylight, not in the dark.
Why people go to Karakol
Jeti-Oguz is a gorge with red rocks known as the “Seven Bulls”; it’s less than an hour from town. Altyn-Arashan is a valley with hot springs that you reach on foot or in a specially equipped off-road vehicle. In summer it’s trekking and lakes; in winter, the Karakol ski base on the slopes of the Terskey Ala-Too. The town also has a Sunday animal market — a sight people come specially to see.
If you plan not just to get there but also to get around once you arrive, the minibus can stay with you for all the days: it takes the group to the start of the route in the morning and picks you up in the evening. That’s easier than making arrangements with local drivers every time, and clearer on cost — we discuss the price in advance.

How long is the drive from Almaty to Karakol?
By the short route via Kegen, about 360 km and roughly 8 hours, including the border crossing. Via Kordai and Bishkek the road is longer, around 600 km. The exact time depends on the line at the border checkpoint.
Is the Karkara crossing open in winter?
Not always. The hours of the Karkyra road checkpoint change, and it’s often open only in the daytime. So we check its schedule before every trip, and if the crossing is closed at the time you need, we go via Kordai and Bishkek — you’ll find out before departure, not at the border.
Can we bring skis and snowboards?
Yes, the Hiace has a separate luggage compartment for skis, boards, backpacks and tents. All 13 can travel light; if everyone has skis or a board, we take 9–10 passengers. Tell us how much gear you have when you book, and we’ll plan the loading around it.
Will the minibus stay with us in Karakol?
That’s up to you. It can be a one-way transfer, a round trip on your dates, or the minibus with its driver working for you on site — taking you to Jeti-Oguz, the ski base and the start of the road to Altyn-Arashan. From there to the springs it’s on foot or by local 4x4: the Hiace doesn’t go on that road.
Why is this better than a scheduled bus?
A scheduled bus runs on a timetable and only goes as far as the bus station, from which you need another ride to your hotel. The minibus takes you from your door in Almaty to your destination in Karakol in one vehicle and leaves when it suits you, and there’s one price for the whole group, with no paying for each seat.
