Our regular driver with 20+ years of experience, fuel, toll sections and pickup in Almaty are all in the quoted price; you don’t pay extra per passenger. National park entrance fees, ski passes and a local off-road vehicle, if your route needs them, are not included.

The round trip is one price. The driver waits for your group on site for as long as you said when booking; if you stay longer, you pay only for the extra hours.

Kok-Zhailau is a high mountain meadow in Ile-Alatau National Park, between the Small and Big Almaty gorges. It’s the best-known hiking route near the city, and an easy one: a green plateau at about 2,200 meters with views of the Trans-Ili Alatau ridges and of Almaty itself. The elevation gain on the way up is around 600 meters, so the trail is doable without special training, and access to the plateau is open to all.
The format is simple: the road only goes to the start of the trail, and the climb to the Kok-Zhailau plateau is on foot. The minibus doesn’t drive up onto the meadow. Its job is different — to gather your group at one spot in Almaty, take you to the start of the route from the Medeu side or from Big Almaty Gorge, and pick you up after the descent. How to get to Kok-Zhailau from Almaty
There are two main approaches to Kok-Zhailau, and both start close to the city. The first is from the Prosveshchenets sanatorium in Small Almaty Gorge, on the road to Medeu: there’s a spring at the start of the trail, and from there you climb to the ridge and follow it to the plateau. The second starts at the Big Almaty Gorge eco-checkpoint, on the road to Big Almaty Lake: past the barrier, a wide, well-worn trail begins. The minibus gets the group to your chosen trailhead in about 40 minutes; from there, it’s on foot.
The climb to the plateau itself takes roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on pace and fitness. Experienced groups sometimes do a through-hike: they go in from one side, cross the meadow and descend to the village of Kumbel or toward Alma-Arasan with its hot springs. In that case the driver will drive around to your exit point and meet you there — so you don’t have to come back the same way and can comfortably do the whole route end to end.
What to bring and how much time to allow
Plan on a full day for the route: the climb, a rest on the plateau and the descent. On Kok-Zhailau itself there are gazebos, benches and information boards, and nearby is the small Batareyka Waterfall, which hikers often visit on the way. There’s no entrance fee from the Prosveshchenets side (a fee is charged only at the Big Almaty Gorge eco-checkpoint), which is one reason big groups love coming here.
Mountain weather changes fast, so even on a warm day bring a windbreaker, plenty of water, snacks and comfortable shoes with grippy soles. It’s best to set off early — the trail is cooler in the morning, and you have more time for an unhurried climb and photos. Anything you don’t need on the trail can stay in the minibus at the trailhead.
Kok-Zhailau seasons and formalities
People hike Kok-Zhailau all year round, but it’s easiest from May to October. In May and June the plateau is green and in bloom, though after rain the trail turns muddy and the climb is slower than usual. In July and August the open sections of the ridge are hot with almost no shade — it’s best to start at dawn. September and October bring the clearest air and the best views, but it gets dark noticeably earlier, so allow an extra hour or hour and a half for the descent. The route isn’t closed in winter, but the trail ices over and you need proper winter footwear; in those months groups often choose the gentler, shorter Kim-Asar near Medeu — a minibus drop-off there takes the same 40 minutes.
Access to the plateau itself is open, but the approach from Big Almaty Gorge goes through the national park’s eco-checkpoint, where an entry fee is charged. The rules and amounts there change from time to time, so check the current conditions before you go. The approach from the Prosveshchenets sanatorium has traditionally been free, and it’s the more popular one. The roads to both trailheads are paved but narrow and winding, and there’s little parking at the trailheads: on weekend mornings cars line the roadside for hundreds of meters. The minibus takes care of all that — the group gets out at the trail, and the driver works out where to wait or where to go to meet you after your descent.
Minibus or taxi to Kok-Zhailau
For a group of 8 to 13 people, one Toyota Hiace is more convenient than several taxis. The group travels together instead of being scattered across cars, nobody gets lost at the start, and backpacks, trekking poles and jackets all go in one luggage compartment. After the descent there’s no need to flag down a car at the trail — the driver is already waiting or brings the minibus at the agreed time.
This works well for corporate outings, hiking clubs and big family groups. The price is fixed for the whole minibus, so the more people go, the less it comes to per person, and everyone gets to the trailhead together — no hitching rides, no marshrutka (shared minibus taxi).
