The cost of hiring a minibus with driver in Almaty is made up of a few clear components. The total grows with the hours the vehicle works, while on intercity trips the price follows the destination: a mountain road, a border and the driver’s overnight stay count for more than kilometers on the map.
What affects the price most:
- Distance. A trip around the city and a drive of hundreds of kilometers are priced differently: intercity trips are priced by destination, where the road, the border and an overnight stay matter, not just the mileage.
- Number of hours. The longer the minibus and driver are booked for you, the higher the cost.
- Route and road. Mountain and dirt stretches on the way to Charyn or Kolsai are slower and harder on the vehicle than a smooth highway.
- Season and date. Weekends, holidays and the peak tourist season from May to September are traditionally busier, and demand is higher.
- Time of day. There’s no separate night rate, but we agree early departures and late returns in advance.
- Waiting time. If the driver waits for you on site for several hours, that’s factored into the quote.

Minibus hire has two main pricing formats, and the right one depends on the job.
Hourly hire works well within Almaty: transfers around the city, taking wedding guests to one agreed drop-off point, a corporate event, a sightseeing trip with several stops. The minimum booking is three hours, so from 30,000 ₸ per booking. You pay for the actual time the Hiace is at your disposal.
A price per trip makes more sense for a specific route: an airport transfer, a trip to Chundzha or Charyn, a group trip to another city. Here the amount is fixed in advance for the destination, and you know the total before you set off.
- Hourly: for the city, events and routes with stops and waiting.
- Per trip: for transfers and intercity routes with a clear start and finish.
Travel times and how intercity trips are priced
Intercity trips are a separate story. The quote is based on the route: the road in both directions, the time on the road and the number of days if the trip includes an overnight stay. There’s no direct link to kilometers: Lake Alakol (about 600 km) costs from 110,000 ₸, while Lake Balkhash (about 470 km) is from 150,000 ₸.
For reference, here are popular destinations from Almaty and the one-way travel time:
- Charyn Canyon: about 215 km, roughly 3 hours on the road. The classic day trip.
- Chundzha hot springs: about 250 km, around 4 hours. Often done with an overnight stay.
- Lake Balkhash: about 470 km, about 6 hours on the road. A full weekend trip.
- Issyk-Kul: about 450 km, 7 to 8 hours including the border with Kyrgyzstan.
